The Discovery Garden
Tiny seeds, mighty discoveries
Growing & Learning in the Garden
Our community garden is more than a place to grow plants—it is an outdoor classroom where children learn by doing, discovering, and caring for the world around them. Each class is assigned their own garden bed, giving children ownership and pride in what they grow. Younger classes tend to flowers and native plants, while older classes grow vegetables alongside native species, creating a thriving, seasonal landscape.
As they nurture their garden beds, children develop important skills such as:
- Responsibility & Care 🌱 – Learning to water, weed, and tend to plants teaches children the value of responsibility and patience.
- Science & Observation 🔍 – Watching seeds sprout, flowers bloom, and vegetables ripen helps children understand life cycles, ecosystems, and seasonal changes.
- Environmental Stewardship 🌿 – Growing native plants invites pollinators, insects, and wildlife into the garden, helping children build respect and appreciation for nature.
- Healthy Habits 🥕 – Planting and harvesting vegetables encourages curiosity about food, nutrition, and where our meals come from.
- Collaboration & Teamwork 🤝 – Working together to care for shared garden beds strengthens social skills, communication, and cooperation.
The garden offers children daily opportunities to see change over time—whether it’s the arrival of new insects, the first bloom of a flower, or the discovery of a bird perched nearby. These living lessons spark wonder while building lifelong connections to the natural world.
We gather together and share what we've done, hooray for everyone
Harvest Days
Each season, Nature’s Nest Preschool hosts Harvest Days, a community event that invites families and neighbors to gather in our garden. On these special Saturdays, families are welcome to pick from the vegetables, herbs, and flowers grown by our children, bringing home the fruits of our shared labor and care.
Every Harvest Day is
pre-planned and announced in advance, giving families plenty of time to join and connect with their community. Beyond harvesting, children enjoy hands-on activities and crafts designed to deepen their understanding of the growing cycle. From seed-to-table projects to insect observations and garden-inspired art, the day offers something for everyone.
Harvest Days are more than garden gatherings—they are opportunities for families to celebrate the cycles of nature, learn alongside their children, and strengthen ties with their neighbors. It’s a joyful blend of learning, sharing, and community rooted in the beauty of the outdoors.
